It probably should more accurately be refered to as PIXELS Per Inch but since the graphics industry has always used the term Dots, that is what is used. I think most of the lower priced units are about 300x600dpi and is suitable for Web Page usage since most of those are only input at 72dpi. HOWEVER, here is where it gets a little technical.... the 72dpi has to be factored based on the TOTAL size you want the image to be on the screen. IF you want it FULL screen, and maybe 20" across, then you have to multiply 20"x72dpi for the TOTAL pixels you need to scan for; (1440). NOW you need to know the ORIGINAL size of the PICTURE you are scanning. IF it is a 8x10 photo, it can be pretty easy -- 10" scanned at 144 dpi will give you 1440 TOTAL pixels. BUT, if your original photo is SMALLER, then you need more initial resolution to be able to scan that photo. IF your original photo was only 1", (instead of 10"), you need a scanner capable of scanning at 1440 dpi to enable you to do that. Since the cheape scanners are only able to scan at 600 dpi to begin with, you have already exceeded the limit. HOWEVER, there ARE scanners avaliable with higher resolutions. There is one that has a 'optical' resolution of 1000x2000 but is more money. Now bear in mind that the first example I used was only producing a image of 72 dpi for WebPage use.... that is actually not very high quality, since if you want anything even 'close' to 'photo quality', you need an output resolution of 720. SO now EVERYTHING I originally said has to be multiplied by a factor of 10X.Therefore, the cheape scanners are NOT SUITABLE for professional results -- but usually are OK for WebPage designers. BUT, also remember that I have not even begun to discuss FILE SIZE for these images, which can be HUGE for 'photo quality' images. (A SINGLE file size of over 100 megs is not unusual) So now we need a FAST COMPUTER to work with and manipulate these files when you are using PhotoShop or other equivalent image editor) Now, I want to confuse you a itsy-bitsy bit more..... scanners are OFTEN quoted with what is refered to as INTERPOLATED resolution. Which is a SOFTWARE manipulation of the original optical image. It is NOT the same as the original OPTICAL resulution... but is often used to make a scanner appear to be better quality than it really is. It is NOT a substitute for original optical resolution since that is really ALL the resolution is from a quality standpoint. Most of the lower priced units, (300x600dpi), indeed can be interpolated to 2400dpi. (And the higher quality units can be interpolated to 9600 if necessary) ONE more item; from a PHOTO quality standpoint; an EQUALLY important, (but usually ignored), specification is GAMMA. This is the White-to-Black range it will effectively image. Most of the cheape units are barely 2 to 2.5. The higher quality ones are 3 to 3.2; (and DRUM scanners can reach 3.5; but cost $25,000) Let me add one thing about Digital CAMERAS since they are all the rage now. Their resolution is rated at 640x480 LINES.... note that this is the TOTAL resolution and not per INCH as the scanners are. This means that their output is much lower quality and not usuable for any type of 'photo' application.... but maybe WebPage only. 97Oct16 09:02 from Hard-KOR @ ECBBS Anyone know when the next computer 'show' is going to hit Sacramento, and where (Expo or Scottish Rite?)? 97Oct16 11:07 from Jetrock @ ECBBS hm. i'd like to know too. the latest ad I saw in the CCN doesn't list a Sacramento show. My guess would be the first week of November. 97Oct16 19:21 from Freddy @ ECBBS Are those shows any good? I went to an Expo in Vegas last year that was sweet, but it was only for vendors. It was for graphics. It was very cool. My teacher from Strata couldn't go, so he offered the tickets to me and my girlfriend. 97Oct17 01:21 from Nexus @ ECBBS I dunno, you can get slightly better prices at those shows than if you look around town, but I still don't feel 100% comfortable with buying at a show. For one thing, you're out the cost to get in (and park at Cal Expo) if noone is carrying what you're looking for, as far as a specific item. Well, maybe the prices are little better than that. I paid $169 for a boxed Monster 3D at the show last month, which I'm guessing is $30 cheaper than anywhere else in town (OEM version is even cheaper, and CompUSA's price for it was like 209 or 219). But I was starting to get pissed when I was having installation problems, I finally got the bugger in, but had I gone to a store with a good return policy, I wouldn't have been sweating it. 97Oct17 02:43 from Jetrock @ ECBBS I've found that the trade shows are definitely worth it, but then I tend to deal with parts a lot (my own tinkering and building/upgrading other people's computers) so I tend to need parts more often than most. I usually go to maybe one show a month, with the membership ($45 for two years, I think it is now) it's economical to go regularly. The ones at Scottish Rite I don't even have to pay for parking, so I'll go sometimes even if I'm not planning on buying anything. Cal Expo is a bigger show with more vendors, but you have to pay $4 for parking or park halfway to Arden and hope you don't get towed, so I only go if I need to get something. I've been going for long enough to know some of the vendors, so I usually know who has the best deals and what people'S return policies are. I've had to return things a couple times and never had a problem if I came back the same day or the next. Admittedly, a lot of these folks come out from the Bay Area, so a problem I don't fin immediatelymay be more hassle--that's the price paid for the lower cost of the products, though, and I've had enough success with stuff I buy there to convince me it's worth it to go to trade shows for most of my computer purchases. And hey, they're fun if you're a big geek like me... 97Oct17 06:47 from Freddy @ ECBBS Gah! You guys are hicks. Why not just drive down to the bay area, Jetrock and grab the parts you need. It costs maybe $10 or so in gas to do this. Plus if, as you say, you are a private consulting firm, you can get amazing rates which make any small discount you'd get here look sicking. I've made quite a few trips there to pick up monitors etc. Though, I don't buy a single item. That seems to imply that these expos are even less worth it. If you are looking for a sound card or a video card only. Amazing. 97Oct17 12:06 from Mark Holtz @ ECBBS I can order out of state and get the same prices. 97Oct17 16:27 from Nexus @ ECBBS Why even both driving down to the bay area? The prices here in town aren't that much different if you look. 97Oct17 16:56 from Jetrock @ ECBBS I don't have a business license--admittedly, I've been kinda putting it off and should "get around to it"--so I can't get dealer prices. And I've seen prices in the bay area, at least in the East Bay and a little in San Francisco, and typically found them to be the same or a little higher than store prices here. I imagine that going down to San Jose might be worth it, but that's a three-hour drive, plus I don't really know where to go around there, and San Jose irritates me anyhow. Going to a trade show, on the other hand, takes five minutes, doesn't cost me anything extra (since I have a membership), and I get to buy stuff from Bay Area dealers at better prices. And yeah, if you're looking for a single relatively low-cost item (like a sound card) then dropping $6 to get into a MarketPro show probably isn't worth it. Typically I recommend folks that the entry fee is worth it if you're planning on spending $100 or more. I go down to the Bay Area often enough, to see bands or to buy records or attend other special events or just to hang out with friends who live down there. Typically computer-parts shopping gets low priority when I'm in the Bay Area: my friends down there aren't computer people. 97Oct18 18:39 from Jetrock @ ECBBS yeah, I've gone to the trade shows with a couple hundred in cash and my shopping list. Especially in the late afternoon when things are starting to close up, it's possible to get a dealer to hack a few dollars off the price if you're stainding there with greenbacks in your hand... 97Oct19 15:33 from Nexus @ ECBBS Who knows when Win98 will come out...:) 97Oct19 19:41 from Damage Inc. @ ECBBS And why do you believe you would want to use it? Just because it's "new"? Surely you'd have more concrete reasons than that. Otherwise you're doing what Microsoft wants you to do, and that means buying into every OS and product upgrade they throw on the shelves. If people don't start being more choosy when they buy this type of stuff, they're going to lose that ability to choose. 97Oct19 19:43 from Damage Inc. @ ECBBS In a manner of speaking -- it'll happen one way or another. In effect, it already has. 97Oct19 22:22 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS Yep, we HAVE lost our ability to choose !!! 97Oct20 6:07 pm Newsflash! from.... from Nightwind @ Bantoom _ Sac-CA linux 97Oct20 07:22 from Freddy @ ECBBS Heh....I wasn't talking retail prices here. Admitedly you need a resalers license but wholesale distributers are huge in San Jose. 97Oct20 10:45 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Yeh. Well, if I get my reseller's license I'll give it a look. But driving down to San Jose for a sound card would be a little silly. And heck, I see other dealers buying stuff at the MarketPro shows (the owner of the surplus computer store off of Fulton, the guys from the Byte Brokers scratch & dent sales, folks from HSC) all the time. And heck, if local dealers shop there, the prices can't be *that* bad... 97Oct20 20:19 from Freddy @ ECBBS True...I'm talking about buying a quanity though. If you are going to buy, say 8 17" monitors you are talking a few dollars more then a 16 bit sound card. 97Oct20 22:35 from Jetrock @ ECBBS hokay. I usually don't deal with that kind of quantity. Typically I just sell systems, usually 486's (tho I built one Pentium system for vampyre cat's husband). Right now, consulting and reselling doesn't net me more than maybe $50 a month. Heck, it took me two years to bother getting business cards made up... 97Oct21 12:22 from Freddy @ ECBBS $50 a month? You aint consulting you're just having fun and charging a little. I got $100 for an hours work at a friend of my mothers out in Utah. And things are cheaper out there. Hell, put an add in the paper. You can make some serious bank. People are so frightened of computers. They don't even listen when you start talking about them. I had a guy who thought he knew what he was talking about ask me about my system. So, I went into detail...Intel Processor...133, 32 meg 10ns dimm, adaptec 2940 scsi card with a 2.2gig scsi hd and a 4x scsi cdrom and a 4x4 ide cdrom drive with an nec 14" monitor (15" viewsonic now). He asked me how much ram it had. Heh. He told me had a 1.5 gig ram drive. Heh. I just said it's fast and I'm happy. Though, I'm thinking about getting a 233 now... 97Oct21 14:51 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Freddy: Pretty much. I make a decent income from my job, computer twiddling is just the occasional icing on the cake. My last consulting job was two calls to a second cousin who wanted some training on his PC and then had me install his Internet software and show him how to use it. Four hours work total, I charged him $55 and lunch, all told. For system sales or installation I charge the cost of the item plus 25%. And yeah, I am having fun and charging a little. It gets me some pocket change. Charging more would mean more hard-sell trying to get customers, which is too much like Real Work to me. And I work 40 hours a week already, plus my other side projects like my band and the occasional college class and a semi-active social life, which is more than enough to fill my schedule. If I ever end up needing much more cash, I might put an ad in the paper and get a biz-license and take the consulting thing more seriously. But heck, I don't even have any official qualifications right now... "You say you're a professional consultant?" "Yep." "I take it you work in the computer field full-time?" "Uh, no, I work with the mentally ill." "Oh, so you went to school to learn about computers?" "Uh, no, I went to school to teach high school history." "So where did you learn about computers?" "Um, I've been mucking about with computers as a hobby since 1983 or so." "...........Oh." 97Oct21 19:53 from Freddy @ ECBBS Heh...I got my first computer back in 77 or 78...comodore vic 20. I started programming on it, and filled all the available memory in about 1 hour. Heh. I bought my first computer (bought) back in 85 or so...an apple IIc...then bought my first pc back in 90 or 91. I bought the apple iic for $850 in 85 or 86 and sold it in 89 for $750. I bought the pc in 90 for $80 and sold it for $1200 in 96. I put about $500 in parts into it. This PC I'm on now I bought for $1100 and have put $40 into it. I could sell it for $1800 or so right now. Heh. I bought it a year ago. Too cool. Like I said $50 aint nothing. Charging friends is screwed too! People I know I don't charge. People I don't I charge depending on what they want me to do. At least $50 on up. I looked at 3 computers and installed win95...$100 seemed like a hell of a deal. Heh. 97Oct22 02:21 from Jetrock @ ECBBS hm. I started fiddling around with Apple II's at school in the eigth grade, and bought a VIC-20 the next year, though in high school I spent more time on the TRS-80's at school than on the VIC-20, whose capabilities I outstripped rather quickly (but was fun for fiddling around with and writing the occasional cheezy program when away from school). In college I never owned a computer but I had access to a number of Macintoshes (both the school's and a roommate's). I spent a lot of time messing around with them and discovering their potential. I was computerless from mid-1991 when I left school until early 1993, when I bought one of the last Macintosh Classics. I was introduced to the world of the IBM PC in fall of 1993 when my work presented me with a dead 286 and said "make it go". In mid-1994 I bought an XT clone with 256K of RAM, a mono monitor, and two 360K floppy drives for $5 at a thrift store. I have incrementally upgraded that system over the past three or so years, replacing every part at least once, and now it's a K5-P166 with all the trimmings. And yeah, $50 ain't nothing. My friends tend to get a cheaper rate (sometimes as cheap as dinner, usually like 10%), but I get a lot of referrals to "friends of friends" for Actual Paying Jobs, though, like I said, still chump change. 97Oct22 18:54 from Lost Surfer @ SBBS Here I am again w/ a problem that's got me baffled and I desperatly need some advice from someone more knowledgeable than me... (Its kind of funny having Freddy misread Jetrocks messages....they are both in agreement on when high inflation ceased actually...) (I have no cursor) Inflation is an interesting beast....its described in textbooks as too much money chasing too few goods....hard to believe in this country that we ever had too few goods...a theory I read lately is that production methods are so efficent now, that the major part of the cost of a good is now shipping it.....which means that the locals should be able to compete with overseas firms in a great number of cases (or competing with ourselves as we often own the overseas firm as well)....so basically we have a stable economy....the excess money that should be causing inflation is going into the stock market as near as I can determine...still working on what happens next.... 97Oct18 11:17 pm from Kitty Cosmos @ Bantoom _ Sac-CA Did we miss a net somewhere? 97Oct16 03:52 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Freddy: Are you sure you're reading my posts? I said that the deficit spending of the 1980's coincided with the *end* of a period of high inflation, the late 1970's. I didn't say 'inflation didn't start till the 80's', Freddy. And I must also mention that gasoline prices also skyrocketed during the initial OPEC oil embargoes in 1974, when a Republican, Richard Nixon, was president. Since 1990, gas prices went way up just before the Gulf War, and sunk back down to around $1 or $1.10 in 1993-1994, and went back up after Clinton started acting like he wanted to start his own Gulf War. They haven't settled back down since. And, as I have mentioned before, I *have* taken an economics class, it was a requirement for my major. Admittedly, I probably spent more time than I should flirting with a cute psych major in said class, but I managed to pass the classwith a B minus. As to this theory linking deficit spending to inflation, I notice a rather abrupt discrepancy with the facts. Assuming that your theory was true, the years with the higest inflation rates must be the years with the highest deficits, namely 1983-1986, the years with the highest deficits in history. But the inflation rates of the late 1970's were much higher than those years, despite a comparatively smaller budget deficit. It's a nice theory, Freddy, it just doesn't happen to match the facts in this instance. Maybe there are other variables involved? 97Oct16 07:28 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS Jet; notice that I am agreeing with you on this; and the high deficits were NECESSARY to PAY the SALARIES resulting from Govt. contracts and employees. 97Oct16 07:37 from Freddy @ ECBBS And Jetrock agreed with me...what world are we in today? Though, he did it in an argumentative way, as if he weren't. He just restated my own post. Also, I did not say that inflation was a 1:1 ratio with deficit spending. I said that deficit spending fueled inflation. We've had inflation for many man year, and most of those were under democratic rule. But, before people go off yet again half cocked, it has nothing to do with political parties. It has to do with people. Make the people responsible for the deficit spending to be responsible for it. If they can blow it off on political party crap, then they are off the hook. 97Oct16 11:11 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Hm. It's odd how I can agree with you when we come to entirely different conclusions. Perhaps it's Freddy's way of saying, "well, Jetrock was right and I was wrong, so I'll say that that's what I thought in the first place". And you did say that "deficit spending and inflation have a direct corolary", which I assumed to mean "in a year of high deficits, inflation will be high", not necessarily a 1:1 proportion--but, once again, it isn't the case. And technically, we've had inflation ever since we had a national currency. I agree with Freddy that political parties are pretty much unimportant, though. The main reason that I whip out all these facts about the Democrats is pretty much to contradict the inaccurate information that the Republicans produce about them. There are plenty of other folks here willing to pump the Republicans, I figure they should have equal time--and equal blame. 97Oct16 12:13 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS Freddy, I don't think he was agreeing with you; just the opposite... he pointed out that the highest deficits came AFTER the highest inflation. I know that economic 'class 101' says over and over that deficits causes inflation. I am saying the exact opposite,,, inflation causes the deficit. MY EVIDENCE ??? Simple, we had extremely high labor demands... which caused higher prices AND higher deficits since most of the money goes to salaries. (And the govt regulations REQUIRE that all contracts pay the HIGHEST applicable rate ---- sort of ironic, it is 'competive' bidding, but everyone still must pay the same high labor rates) So our 'problem' is any and ALL labor demands above the COL -- (excluding MERIT increases which all good workers DESERVE and are ENTITLED to) Freddy, you said it has nothing to do with political parties; I certainly agree; it is 100% related to the individual legislators.... but it just so happens that 99% of the Republicans are for reducing/controling spending... and 99% of Democrats are for increased spending; (especially into their own pocket). NOTE: that Tom Dasher just took another bunch of people up to the top of Mt.Rushmore at $5000/head.... under our laws, any 'unspent' campaign funds can indeed go into your own pocket... do we know he is 'spending' all these funds ??? He could be running his own private 'tour' company --- with $0000 expenses and FEDERAL Park Rangers doing his tour guiding for him !!! 97Oct16 16:26 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS Isn't it irrelevant which came first, deficits or inflation? Deficit spending is an evil which must be stomped out. Perhaps there is no direct connection, I really don't care. Now that 27% of the annual budget is used to service past deficit spending we must pay the piper soon. There is no way that we can continue providing equal services while the budget is increasingly whittled away by compounded interest. 97Oct16 17:16 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Fairly well fixed, eh? As I said earlier, another "benefit" of deficit spending and the ensuing massive debt is the resulting outcry to cut services to balance the budget... 97Oct16 19:27 from Freddy @ ECBBS Jetrock, learn how to use corolarys. A direct corolary means they both move in the same direction, not the same speed. Lots of politicians and statitians use this terminology to try to imply that they move the same speed. And as far (since you want to argue with me) as you and I have different points entirely...we didn't. You restated my entire post, you did try to twist my words into untruths, but you said exactly the same thing I did. I never said that inflation and deficit spending move at the same rates. I said that they move in the same direction. 97Oct16 23:25 from Turk @ ECBBS Without deficit spending none of those "services" would exist. And should not exist under government auspices. 97Oct17 02:52 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Turk: It's quite possible to provide services without deficit spending, as long as there is sufficient income from taxes. Whether they should be provided or not is another argument entirely--but yes, you can provide services without deficit spending--exactly what those 'services' are is another matter... 97Oct17 06:55 from Freddy @ ECBBS Wow. No response from Jetrock.. I'm writing this down on my calendar. Another first. 97Oct17 09:45 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS Jets, I think Turk is speaking of the current situtation with government. He's right, without massive deficit spending most of the social services now in place would not exist. As to the government providing those services I'd agree more with Turk, private insurance is a much better way to go than an inefficient, bloated bureaucracy. 97Oct17 17:11 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Curly Surmudgeon: But this "massive deficit spending" was largely the result of Reagan's grotesque military budgets, followed by Bush's grotesque military budgets and Clinton's grotesque military budgets. And we could balance the budget without *ANY* cuts in services if 50% of the $450 billion in corporate wealthfare was eliminated. The purpose of deficit spending is to create a half-assed justification for cutting social services... 97Oct17 17:54 from Turk @ ECBBS You can't provide social spending for long without jacking up taxes or cutting services. We all know that programs expand and expand and expand. Either way, you have cuts to remain solvent or you run deficits and pretend to be solvent. Canada did not have Reagan or a massive military budget and their deficits were worse than ours as a percentage. That may still be the case, I have not kept track lately. If we run 10 years without a deficit I may reconsider my opinion. I expect to see flying pigs playing with snowballs in hell long before this country, and most governments, have fiscally sane policies and abide by them. 97Oct17 18:55 from Jetrock @ ECBBS You're kinda putting the cart before the horse there, Turk. Our government historically runs at a deficit, but that in no way means that it HAS to run at a deficit. And programs only "expand and expand and expand" if you let them: as I pointed out earlier, HUD certainly didn't "expand and expand and expand" during the Reagan administration, unless your definition of "expand" means "get smaller". Some programs expand, some shrink, some stay the same size. The "feed the rich with insane arms expenditures" program certainly expands, and, as you said, it buys a lot of votes. Though I will agree with what appears to be your basic premise, which is that the best way to get fiscally sane policies is to do without government entirely, though I personally would prefer to do without big business as well (though getting rid of government is a great assist towards that end). 97Oct18 11:20 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS I'd take issue with that comment that government historically runs massive deficits. The last 60 years is but a drop in the bucket of time and even then we've had a few years with a surplus. Wasn't 1973 the last year? But _Massive_ deficits have happened only during the depression and since Reagan. This must stop. 97Oct19 12:27 pm from Kitty Cosmos @ Bantoom _ Sac-CA I had to chuckle when I read, "Perhaps there is no connection, I really don't care. (Curly Surmudgeon)" That's really what this is all about, isn't it? Everybody has his own theory, point of view, whatever... and doesn't care what anybody else thinks. You're all a little bit right, but if you can't work together, the system stays broken. 97Oct19 03:59 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS Historically inflation follows a presidential election by about 18 months. The incumbant president cranks up the printing presses about a year or year and a half before the election to get the economy heated. But to slow it down takes a recession. We are due for a falling stock market and rising dollar late next spring. 97Oct19 10:01 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS But what the hell does "too much money" directly have with INFLATION ??? I know that is economics 101 but I simply don't buy it. Inflation is when prices go up.... if COMPETITION is active.... the prices will stay low and thus no inflation. So what is people are buying more with more money --- that is still not inflation if the prices are not rising. Supply and Demand ??? --- Yes that can cause an increase in prices; but as mentioned; we don't really have a 'shortage' of many items. BUT; when production/shipping costs go up; the PRICES have to go up --- (inflation). The unions again are going CRAZY with their labor demands... so I agree that we are again setting the stage for future inflation, just as in the late 60's and 70's. I want someone to tell me ONE justification for a NON MERIT raise demand that is above the 'PAST' COL ??? 97Oct19 11:25 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS DAMN IT JET; I just SAID that the Economic 101 TEXTBOOK DEFINITION of Inflation is "too much money".... but I said that I DON'T BUY IT. The MINIMUM price for a product is the COST to PRODUCE/SHIP/SELL it. The MAXIMUM price is LIMITED by COMPETITION. If LABOR cost's go up, the prices go up; if competition is active, the price cannot go up... but if ALL the same companies in the industry also raise their prices at the same time; AND that product is essential; then everyone still has to buy it.... BUT, BUT, BUT; we have just had INFLATION. The goal of unions is to put a strangle hold on an ENTIRE INDUSTRY. They have been successful in 'some' essential industries.... in others, they have resulted in the loss of that entire industry. (And they 'wonder' why their numbers have decreased) If you do not believe me, then simply meet my challenge to name some products that have increased more than the COL that are non-union ... (or Govt. regulated) ....and name some products that are union that have not increased more than the COL !!! ???????? 97Oct19 11:38 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS Wages have NOT been slumping for the last 25 years. 30 years ago, min wage was $1.25; 10 years ago it was $3.35, 5 years ago it was $4.25; and now it is almost $6.00... is that 'slumping' ????? Seems to me it is 6x more than 30 years ago.... (and COL has only gone up 4x in the same period so min wage is MORE than COL) ..... BUT --- PRICES on UNION controlled industries have increased 10X in that same 30 years... on non-union industries the prices have either stayed the SAME or at best kept up with COL; (and in some cases have actually and truly LOWERED). You suggested raising the min-wage to $8./hr.... fine, OK; BUT what about the RETIRED, or UNEMPLOYED that have no choice but to make it on a fixed income ????? Sure, maybe some 'average' wages have indeed slumped; but maybe that is partially because the union percentage of Over-Paid Extortionests have dropped from 30% to 11% ???? BUT, they still control the prices of many ESSENTIAL industries. (Can you MAIL a box through anyone except USPS or UPS ????) (Can you buy a CAR that was not made by unions ????) (Can you buy a HOUSE that was not built by unions ????) (Arn't all Govt. highway/dam construction contracts required to be done by unions or pay union wages... thus higher taxes ???? ) 97Oct19 14:04 from Mark Holtz @ ECBBS JoePhoto: The minimum wage is *NOT* an accurate way to measure how much wages have been slumping over the years. What I would like to see expressed in a percentage basis how much of an average person's gross paycheck is spent in the following areas: * Taxes and social security * Housing Costs * Food Costs * Fuel Costs * Clothing Costs Now, I'm willing to bet you five bucks that if we compare the percentages from 1950 with 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, and today, that we will see major jumps in the taxes and housing costs, especially in California where, since 1950, there was a real estate boom and housing costs went through the roof. 97Oct19 20:02 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Joe: I said WAGES have been slumping, not the minimum wage. And real wages, in terms of buying power, have been slumping (compared to cost of living) for a quarter-century. And you're seeing demons in the corner again: the purpose of unions is to REPRESENT THE WORKER. It's capitalists who spend their time trying to get a stranglehold on an industry. And you're forgetting that when WORKERS' INCOMES go up they spend more money on products! This keeps demand curves stable. Your UPS/USPS argument is garbage: there are HUNDREDS of mail delivery companies. During the UPS strike, half the reason why businesses did badly wasn't due to a lack of shippers--most businesses already had backup suppliers ready. But since everyone saw news stories on TV about how it's so hard to mail a package because of the UPS strike, people stopped calling in orders for products requiring delivery. By their anti-union slant in the story, the corporate media CREATED that economic slump--to fit their story! 97Oct19 20:30 from sinner @ ECBBS joe just doesn't want competition in the workplace. at least not by the workers. he wants the MAN to be in power. in ABSOLUTE power. somehow that is best. 97Oct20 01:18 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS First of all there is NOT 'hundreds' of MAIL delivery services. There are indeed a 'couple' of Airborne alternatives.. (Federal, Airborne, RPS, etc).... but they do NOT do the same thing as UPS or USPS.... (inexpensive SMALL package GROUND delivery). Wages do not mean a DAMN THING, NOTHING.... Wages are totally irrevalent.... ALL that is important is PRICES. Wages have to be spent on products and the PRICES of those products is what determines your "standard of living". Yes, I agree that cost of many, (union controlled), products have increased MORE than the COL and thus "wages" therefore now buy LESS. But the COL itself is heavely weighly weighed towards union controlled items. Mark is totally accurate when he asked for todays percentage of income that is spent on certain items... I have said before that in 1967, I know for a FACT that average income was about $6,000/yr but a NICE HOUSE could be bought for under $10,000... thus a house could be bought for less than two years salary. (I bought a 3br2bath house in 1972 for $13,000) In 1969, I rented a HOUSE for $30/mo. -- and was making a salary of $500./mo at the time. So HOUSING was a very MINOR expense in the 60's. Taxes also were effectively smaller, (especially Social Security which is now the MAJOR part of what I pay in taxes) Clothing, on the other hand was MORE EXPENSIVE than it is today is some respects... I remember buying a SUIT for over $100 in 1967. Autos in 1967 were from $1000, (VW), to $3000 for a full size Ford, Chev LTD/Impalla. Cadallics and Mercedes were only $5000-$6000 so a auto could be bought on 6 months salary. The equivalent $3000 auto is almost $40,000 today. 97Oct20 10:49 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Joe: YOU KNOW OF a couple airborne package services. There are hundreds of mail courier companies. Wages make a lot of goddamn difference if you're a worker, and they're YOUR WAGES! The amount of money you make determines your standard of living, Joe. To believe otherwise is, quite frankly, to be on crack. 97Oct20 12:53 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS I wanna send a 5# package to Miami... I want to send it as CHEAP as I can, and ground service, (5 days) is adequate.... HOW MANY CHOICES DO I HAVE ???? (Jesus Christ this gets monotous) The amount of money you make does NOT determine your standard of living .... ONLY what you can BUY with those wages !!!! (Jesus Christ this gets monotous) 97Oct20 13:08 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS Good point Kitty, we _should_ all work together. I'd like to think that the arguements between Joe and Jets are beside the point and that we all belive that deficit spending and bloated government must cease. They argue an issue which is somewhat irrelevant to the larger issue of what affects us all, excessive taxation. 97Oct20 13:23 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS Jets; you also said unions are there to "REPRESENT THE WORKER"... exactely how well have they done that when they have caused the total and complete demise of several entire industries ???? Amtrak is going to go on strike.... they already are operating at a LOSS and do not have many paying customers.... if their rates have to go up after a labor agreement... is there going to be more or less customers ????? And if there is LESS CUSTOMERS, will some workers LOSE THEIR JOBS..... (is that how they are going to 'help' them) ???? 97Oct20 15:40 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS Amtrack has already raised fares this year and their ridership is way down. The Capital run is even deeper in the red. A round trip fare went up almost 30% to some destinations in California. Another round of fares will completely destroy Amtrak. But this is good, one less failing industry to subsidize. 97Oct20 15:56 from sinner @ ECBBS then we can pave the train tracks and make them bike paths. they've already done this to a few old tracks. i hear a plan to have paths to connect the west coast and the east coast...and northern a southern borders. sounds good to me. and we'll need fewer coolies and irishmen to do it this time. 97Oct20 22:54 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Joe: There's this thing called the phone book. Look under Delivery Service or Freight Forwarding. There *are* delivery companies other than UPS. The closest analogy I can think of for the ridiculousness of this insistence that UPS is theonly delivery company in the universe would be, 'Oh no, the Kleenex workers are on strike! What will I blow my nose on?' And, once again, the purpose of the union is to provide workers with a voice and a communal bargaining position. Maintaining profitability is the boss's problem. And, once again, workers' pay, in real wages, has been going down for 25 years.Executive pay has been doing the reverse. 97Oct20 23:45 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS I have agreed Executive CEO pay is exhorbidant.... but I do not think it significantly affects retail prices the way the TOTAL payroll does. And I repeat again .... wages have not been going down for 25 years, but PRICES of union built items have increased FASTER ... !!! Jet, I am kind of LAZY; would you PLEASE help me by looking in the phone book for me and tell me of another alternative for CHEAPLY sending a 5# package on a 5 day trip to Miami... (thank you) ??? sinner; I didn't understand your post at all,,, first you suggested "paving" over all the railroad tracks... I suppose you were not serious since I KNOW you CARE about all those employees that would be out of work.... OOPS, maybe you do not CARE about those workers at all, since you already said you were in favor of SACRIFICING the UPS part-time workers that were laid off in favor of fewer full-time ones. 97Oct22 1:36 am from Kitty Cosmos @ Bantoom _ Sac-CA But just think of all the "paving" workers who would get jobs! (j/k) Anyway, something tells me I'd better take a ride on Amtrack before it is gone for good. 97Oct21 09:58 from sinner @ ECBBS train tracks that aren't being used, Joe. and on the UPS thread..i said i'd rather have the workers take a stand and fight. when people fight they tend to have to sacrifice. ever hear of a bloodless war? you would rather all workers be poor and groveling at the feet of the MAN. and you are gonna say _I_ don't careiiiive me a break! 97Oct21 10:02 from sinner @ ECBBS give that is. 97Oct21 10:17 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS Federal Express purchased RPS last month. Perfect match, UPS, your days of glory are over. 97Oct21 12:03 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS sinner; does ANYONE ever 'win' a WAR ????? But lets look that this different anyway; I just said that the Unions have only resulted is LOSING entire INDUSTRIES.... thus millions of WORKERS are out of work totally -- because of unions. Union percentage is down from over 30% to 11%.... is that 'winning' a way anyway. I just asked if anyone ever 'wins' a war... but it appears to me that they are simply LOSING !!! The only ones that may be winning are the 'Generals', (union management --- that does NO WORK and only lives on the 'contributions' from their SUCKER workers). If a General loses a battle, he is usually immediately replaced; but union management is losing the WAR --- and the sucker 'workers' praise them..... ha, ha, ha, ha.... who is the JOKE on ???? UPS just went on strike but will receive LESS retirement than UPS offered them... because their Generals want to control their money --- The same Generals that are losing the war vs company management that has SUCCESSFULLY built UPS from SCRATCH and done a FANTASTIC job of management.... and the same management that as NEVER been accused of any wrongdoing..... (note that the union management is in deep doo-doo over Democrat campaign MONEY LAUNDERING) 97Oct21 12:29 from Freddy @ ECBBS How big is Consolidated Frieghter? I don't think HP ships anything UPS. Heh. 97Oct21 12:35 from sinner @ ECBBS Joe: yes, people win wars. if you are saying that people should never fight for anything then you have a rather defeatist attitude. i thought you said you had nothing against unions, a while back? that you were just against there being "closed shops" and such. well, i agree. actually, we agree completely. you see, i've been paying attention. no need to drag me back into a debate...since it's all been said. i'm against union thug-ism, i'm for "right to work", and i believe that SOME union workers get more than they deserve. i'm NOT against unions or unionism, though. i believe unions have their place. i believe that a reasonable goal of unions is to represent their members and their best interests. asking for so much of a employer as to make the employer lay off masses of workers, or to shut down operations completely, is NOT in the workers best interest. so, where do we disagree? 97Oct21 14:27 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS Now you are getting worse than Freddy in saying something and then denying you ever said it. You have on several occassions reacted with a large HURRAY when the 'unions' WON one. BUT, did they EVER win.... UPS workers will now get less in retirement than they would have without it... and how long will it take to overcome the money they lost while they were out on strike in the first place... (this is particually true if it is a long strike). They are just 'pawns' of THE MAN, (union management); and are thus the 'privates' dying on the battlefield for their 'Generals'. What about those Part-Time workers that lost their jobs... many of them WANTED Part-Time work bacause they may be single moms that have to support their family and HIGH PAYING - PART TIME is exactely what is BEST for them... but they now have lost their choice.... AND YOU SAID THEY WERE WORTH SACRIFICING !!! 97Oct21 15:22 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Joe: If you're so torqued about unions, just consider what labor was like BEFORE unions. 97Oct21 18:17 from sinner @ ECBBS i said we agreed...because we do. unless YOU are lying. i'm not a liar. 97Oct21 23:04 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS I have said about a DOZEN times that I totally and completely agree that CEO/Management salaries are exhorbidant... including just about two posts before this one.... I have NEVER defended CEO/Management salaries... only that they are not the main cause/reason for inflated prices. The closest I have ever come to 'defending' them is to state that their jobs are very un-secure and they can be dismissed overnight by stockholders. And yes; I have said that "some" of the union workforce is VASTLY over-paid... which really does NOT bother me ---- BUT; I am bothered by the resulting prices from those vastly over-paid individuals. My standard-of-living is LESS today than it was in 1967 when I made $3.12/hr because then I could rent a HOUSE for $30. and buy a NEW CAR for $1500. (or even BUY a house for under $10,000) 97Oct21 23:32 from sinner @ ECBBS well, that is the main sticking point with us. i don't believe that unions are the main culprit, or even close. those union workers would get paid something, right? and they are, what, like %18 percent of all U.S. workers. AND, all of them aren't overpaid...i will agree many are. each point wittles down their impact. so, looking at OTHER reasons for your standard of living would be equally appropriate. i only hear you point to one scapegoat. i think that having allowing unions (i'm ceratinly not for banning them, are you?) WITH right to work would make a more level playing field. i think closed shops are wrong. unions would still be effective...but based on merit (the skills of the workers in the union). if the bosses paid way less to non-union people, those people would go to the union. if the workers are unskilled, then the bosses could find nearly anyone to do the job AND they would pay competitive wages. 97Oct21 23:44 from sinner @ ECBBS unions are (or should be) the equivalent of a group of workers going into the bosses office and saying "excuse me, sir..we would like a raise". if those workers are worth it (and would cost too much to fire and train new workers) the boss would look at his books and say "i'll see what I can do". i did that once (by myself) and got a $2 an hour raise. actually, i said "mack, i hate job. it's not worth it in for me to work here". mack said "damn, Steve, we need you here. you're my best worker. i'll give you a raise". that's how it works. the rest of the guys there were hella pissed (like you are about unions) because they went in over the next couple days and only one other guy got ANY raise at all. no need to get jealous, i thought. "i'm the best". so in a BETTER world it should be on merit. in a WORSE world we'd ban unions all together. hey, unions are businessed service industries). some work better than others. to blame ALL unions and union members, even with the way it is, is rather shortsighted. when more than half of every dollar we make goes to government, unions is hardly the be all and end all of SOL declines. 97Oct22 00:31 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS You said nothing in those last two posts that I disagree with... but from a 'practical' situation; most union shops are NOT like that. The Govt' supports them with laws against right-to-work; thus leaving the companies at the 'mercy' of the union leadership.... whether it be bad for the company OR EMPLOYEES. Actually come to think of it; we do disagree on whether excessive salaries are the 'cause' of high prices. I have stated my 'evidence' that the particular items that are over-prices just happen to be the same ones that pay min-wage caliber people $48/hr. I have stated before, (over and over), that the COL has increased 3x-4x since 1967 but PRICES on union items; (specifically those with excessive salaries); have increased 10X in the same time period. WHAT OTHER EXPLANATION DO YOU HAVE FOR THE DRASTIC INCREASE ???? And can't you accept that "workers" plight in general is much, much worse when they cannot buy the New Cars and New HOMES today when they could in 1967; (on ONE persons salary where it takes TWO peoples salary today to almost equal the 1967 buying power). 97Oct22 02:32 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Um, you're making the assumption there that all cars are made by union workers and all homes are built by union contractors, and all supermarkets are staffed by union employees. But this isn't the case, not even remotely so. 97Oct22 09:07 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS I don't have a problem with voluntary Unionism. Only when it becomes coersive to either the member or an employer. For exactly that reason I'd be very harsh on public employee unions. Strike and you're dead meat, as a public employee that is. In private enterprise I don't have a problem with strikers until they become violent or vandals. Let them picket, I'd even join them on occasion. But to prevent others from taking jobs that they don't want? 97Oct22 09:26 from sinner @ ECBBS Joe: i CAN accept that last part of your post. i just don't believe unions are any more to blame than many MANY other contributing factors. union membership has been going DOWN while all those COL changes were going up. so, nuff said. i said we pretty much agreed about everything on the union topic, except that unions are the major cause of world calamity. no need to go on about it. 97Oct22 19:36 from Turk @ ECBBS Sheesh, 40 messages. :) My only correction is to Curly. I said governments historically run deficits. I did not say massive deficits. The debt adds up, though. Your point of the last balanced budget being in '73 sort of agrees with me. :) I'll agree on your unionism stance. If workers can opt out of the union, fine. I can even agree with a total union shop if the company is stupid enough to sign the contract. Intimidation by any side is wrong. Barring a contract stating otherwise, I have no problem with replacement workers being hired- and kept. 97Oct22 21:57 from Jetrock @ ECBBS I'd rather be able to opt out of work entirely... one problem I have with unions is that it's basically a form of pimping. The main issue is the indignity of having to rent one's life out in order to survive. And if bosses could somehow be held to stop intimidating and coercing their workers (and if you think threats of layoffs and such aren't coercion, you're smoking that funny stuff, kiddo), then maybe there wouldn't be a need for unions. Though the best policy overall, in my opinion, is to lower the workweek. The sixty-hour workweek is a hisstorical relic, the forty-hour workweek is a creaking antique whose time has passed. It's time to move on to a thirty-hour, then twenty-hour and maybe ten-hour workweek... 97Oct22 22:22 from sinner @ ECBBS and for anyone that wishes to bitch about unions. i got one thing to say. go get a union job. it's easy. actually the trend of there being LESS union membership has NOTHING to do with fewer people wanting those union jobs. it's the campaign against them that makes them less available. i DO find it funny to see so many working class people mouth the words of the corporate bosses.."unions are communism!"...bla blah blah. it's like these working people are stating arm in arm with the corporate executives...except they don't get a company car, a secretary, an expense account, a window office with a view, a 3 martini working lunch every day, a summer retreat cabin in the hills... all they get is the pleasure of being a brainwashed lackey. 97Oct22 22:30 from sinner @ ECBBS sure, i believe in union reforms. but, i believe in corporate reforms MORE. i remember seeing a thing a while back where something like 5% of the population has %50 of the wealth. and considering that the government takes more than half of every WORKING persons dollar. i find it hard to believe that those few people that make more than someone else are to blame (and i'm NOT talking about unions, i'm talking about people that got luckey and ended up making more) for all the less fortunate peoples plight. some people make more, some less. that's business, and the (wave flag here) american way. 97Oct22 23:18 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS I'll drop the union stuff in this room.... Lets get back to politics ----- appears to be REPUBLICANS that are getting IRS reform... (I know, there is "no difference"; I guess I just 'missed' the IRS reform by the Democrats) !!! 97Oct23 03:38 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Oh, great. Reform. In other words, more tax breaks for corporations? Swell. Remind me to cheer or something. Next activity.... 97Oct23 03:39 from Jetrock @ ECBBS When the main IRS building goes flat OK City style, now that's my idea of 'IRS reform'. 97Oct23 11:39 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Thing is, Joe, there is no guarantee that either plan, Republican or Democrat, would make any real changes. Small businesses will probably still have to deal with that kind of tactics from the IRS--but large businesses would suddenly notice their taxes getting lighter. The Republicans are just as dependent as the Democrats on the IRS to pay their paycheck and provide funding for their corporate welfare and military misadventures. Any significant changes in the IRS's operation will be to benefit their friends only--it's the only way they can circumvent the president's line-item veto which is costing a lot of businesses their hard-lobbied special exemptions. 97Oct23 12:45 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS That is REDICULOUS; and misses the point I am trying to make. The Democrats were there for 40 years and allowed it to deterioate to where it is. I agree we have to WAIT to see if the Republicans are indeed going to make any 'effective' changes.... BUT, I have seen the list of the proposals and they ALL LOOK GOOD. The point is that it 'appears' the Republicans are doing SOMETHING, SOMETHING, SOMETHING !!! You just acknowledged the Line Item Veto is having 'some' effect.... it was the REPUBLICANS that did it !!! It was the Republicans that "promissed" the Contract-On-America" and FULFILLED THAT PROMISE !!! The Democrats have never ever done ANYTHING 'for' America; (only 'for' themselves) !!! I have asked for even a single example of legislation the Democrats have done in the last 40 years that has been 'good' for the 'average' person. Sure they have done School Busing and other Civil Rights issues... and Anti-Gun, etc. etc. etc. What specifically do you disagree with in the Contract-On-America ????? --- And WHY did the Democrats never do ANY of them ????? 97Oct24 02:51 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Joe: Yeah, but the SOMETHING is just more tax breaks for the rich. I don't have a copy of the Contract on America handy, could you list the major points? And maybe the Dems din't do them because they didn't think they were things worth doing? 97Oct24 13:47 from hank @ ECBBS We owe the IRS NOTHING. Mandatory income taxes are illegal. Reform my way would be bombing all the buildings as earlier recommended in this room. bah. 97Oct25 10:26 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS BOOM !!! 97Oct25 10:27 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS The Contract was actually two separate sets of promisses; the first set was to be done the FIRST DAY... and the second was promissed within the first 100 days. The FIRST DAY set; 1. Require all laws that apply to the rest of the country also apply equally to the Congress. 2. Select a major, independent auditing firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of Congress for waste, fraud or abuse; 3. Cut the number of House committees, and cut comittee staff by 1/3; 4. Limit the terms of all committee chairs; 5. Ban the casting of proxy votes in committee; 6. Require committee meetings to be open to the public; 7. Require a 3/5's majority vote to pass a tax increase; 8. Guarantee an honest accounting of our Federal Budget my implementing zero-base-line budgeting. The 100 day goal to bring each of these issues to a "debate"; and at least a "vote"; 1. FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY ACT: A balanced budget/tax limitation admendment and Legislative LINE-ITEM VETO !!! 2. THE TAKING BACK OUR STREETS ACT: An Anti-Crime package including stronger Truth-in-sentencing, effective death penalty provisions and cuts in "SOCIAL" spending from this summers crime bill to fund prison construction and additional law enforcement to keep people secure in their neighborhoods and kids safe in their schools. (NOTE: that Clintons bill did NOT put 100,000 new cops on the streets as claimed) 3. THE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY ACT: Discourage illegitamacy and teen pregnancy by prohibiting welfare to minor mother and denying 'increased' AFDC for 'additional' children while on welfare.... encourage work requirements and promote individual responsibility; 4. THE FAMILY REINFORCEMENT ACT: Child support enforcement, tax incentives for ADOPTION, strengthing rights of parents in their childrens education; stronger child pornography law and an elderly dependent care tax credit to reinforce the central role of families in American society. 5. THE AMERICAN DREAM RESTORATION ACT; A $500/child tax credit; begin repeal of the "Marriage" PENALTY, and creation of American Dream SAVINGS Accounts to provide middle calsss tax relief. 6. THET NATIONAL SECURITY RESTORATION ACT: No US Troops under U.N. command and restoration of the essential parts of our national security funding to strengthen our national DEFENSE and maintain our credibility around the world. 7. THE SENIOR CITIZNES FAIRNESS ACT: Raise the Social Security earnings limit which currently forces seniors that WANT to work, out of the work force... repeal the 1993 tax hikes on Social Security 'benefits' and provide tax incentives for private long-term insurance to let older americans keep more of what they have earned over the years. 8. THE JOB CREATION AND WAGE ENHANCEMENT ACT" Small business incentives, capital gains cut and indexation, neutral cost recovery, risk assessment/cost-benefit analysis, strengthening the Regulatory Flexivility Act and unfunded mandate reform to create jobs and raise workers wages. 9. THE COMMON SENSE LEGAL REFORM ACT: "Loser pays" laws, reasonable limits on punitive damages and reform of product liability laws to stem the endless tide of litigation. 10. THE CITIZEN LEGISLATIVE ACT: A first-ever vote on TERM LIMITS to replace career politicians with citizen-legislators. FURTHER: We will instructy the House Budget Committee to report to the floor and we will work to enact additional budget savingsx beyond the budget cuts specifically included in the legislation described above, to ensure that the Federal Budget Deficit will be LESS than it would have been without the enactment of these bills. NEWT: has now said that "We Ain't Seen Nuthin Yet"... and is of course now proposing additional tax cuts, and IRS reform. 97Oct25 10:54 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS I am sure Jet will find INDIVIDUAL points of disagreement with some of these things... but remember that it is a START, and SOMETHING.... I again challenge anyone to give me even ONE similar example of 'beneficial' legislation the Demo's have done in the last 40 years. BUT: most important, is not the FACT that these proposals were made BEFORE ELECTION --- but that they FOLLOWED THROUGH on them..... note they did not promisse to actually 'pass' the final 10 items... but only to 'debate' them.... but please note that MOST of them WERE PASSED... (and within the 100 day goal). PLEASE name ONE example of a Democrat 'promise' that was not forgotten the day AFTER the election. (What about Clintons "IDEAL - OF - THE - DAY"; that he was spouting off to defeat Dole... has Clinton said anything about any of them since the election ??? ) 97Oct25 12:48 from sinner @ ECBBS well, the Contract with America certainly isn't one with me. So, Contract with Conserative Repubicans would be more appropriate. of those 10 items that (actually more because each item contained several minor points) are in the 100 day goal i only agreed with "loser pays in litigation", NOTHING else. ZERO. and of the First Day set, i only agreed with #1 and #8. and those are hardly exclusively republican ideals. 97Oct25 13:26 from Jetrock @ ECBBS it's a start of something called fascism. The first set of points is basically changes in Congressional rules, mainly technical points. as to the second part of the Contract on America: 1) They increased the power of the executive again. Joy. And the FRA is the first half of a FRAud. Basically, they promise to be nice boys and Not Do It Again. woo. 2) oh great. More pigs, more jails, more police terrorizing our citizens. Pardon me while I cheer. Clinton got two similar bills passed in his first term calling for the same thing. 3) the More Americans will Starve to Death Act. woo woo. Someone should have told Dole and Newt about personal responsibility when they divorced their first wives. 4) Hm. "Child support enforcement". That wouldn't be that MASSIVE DATABASE they just started that contains the NAME and ADDRESS and INCOME LEVEL of EVERY TAXPAYER, which the government promises it'll only use to find those nasty folks who owe child-support. The fact that it's an incredibly useful tool for tracking every taxpayer in the country is incidental. The other bits of this act are essentially cop-outs. 5) Great. Subsidizing more childbirth. Woo woo. What "marriage penalty"? If they want middle-class tax relief, why won't they pass a middle-class tax cut that would cut taxes for people who make less than $250,000 a year? 6) Oh joy. We don't have to assist the UN like every other major power, and we want to spend more money on weapons. The fact that Clinton has been giving the Pentagon more money than they asked for each year in office just isn't enough. This one is PARTICULARLY stupid. 7) Let rich people keep their Social Security checks, they obviously need it as much as poor people! I know the SS laws, SS doesn't force people out of work, it just reduces their checks if they work in addition to getting SS. Basically they are increasing SS's expensiveness with this one, by sending checks to people who don't need them. 8) Hm. Profit enhancement for big business, looks like. With some meaningless rhetoric about job creation that has nothing to do with the legislation, but it keeps people from getting too furious about more tax breaks for big business. 9)Limit private citizens' main means of enforcing the accountability of large corporations. If someone gets hurt because of some corporation's faulty product, says the Democrats, they should have their own legal department and millions to spend on the lawsuit! This is another part of the package that basically protects the rich from everyone else. 10) A term-limits package to replace sitting Democrats with new Republican stealth candidates. joy. So, yeah, it's a start--towards institutionalized fascism. All these laws are stupid. And Joe, why do you never mention any Democrat but Clinton? There are a couple others, you know. 97Oct25 18:34 from sinner @ ECBBS Contract ON Americans...to be sure. let's starve more babies, put more people in prison, make it so people can't vote for who they wish, get a BIGGER police state, take the ability of the little guy to sue the big guy and hurt him, and let's force the masses to pay even more to the Christian churches. oh, and those poor rich people need more hand-outs. 97Oct30 6:46 am Fire Phasers! from Ghek the Kaldane @ Bantoom _ Sac-CA Typical arguments of those who have nothing to offer....Heh...I like the contract with America....it follows historical american values and applies them. Some time this week they will announce who will join the National League Central in baseball realignment. It will be either Kansas City or Minnesota to make room for the two new teams, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Arizona will join the AL Central and Tampa Bay will join the AL East. That's all for now, so enjoy the sports feast. I'm tomcat Leader and you're up to date on sports. 97Oct28 8:36 am Pass Interference from Tomcat Leader 10-3. I'm improving. Jim Harbaugh will not play for about 3 weeks after fracturing his during a fight with former Bills QB Jim Kelly. Kelly called Harbaugh a "crybaby" while on tv. Harbaugh approached Kelly with a few expletives and a fight ensued. q 97Oct30 1:26 pm Pass Interference from Tomcat Leader Hey, sports fans. It's that time again, time for my personal picks. So, here we go. 1) Buffalo at Miami. The bills apparently forgot how to win, although they do know how to fight. Just ask Jim Kelly. No win scenario in Miami, Take Dolphins and the points. 2) New England at Minnesota. The Vikes are on a mojo roll. And share the lead with the Pack in the NFC Central. Pats are still reeling after finding ways to gift wrap Monday night's game. Take the Nords and the points. 3) Oakland at Carolina. Is this a joke? If so, it's not funny. Two losing teams with lousy defenses. Another Sleeper Bowl. Take Carolina, give the points. 4) Washington at Chicago. this used to be a good matchup. Now it's dulls- ville. Chicago will not win another game this season. Take the Redskins and the points. 5) San Diego at Cincinnati. I love both teams, but the Bengals are due for a win , not to mention desperate. Who better to sock it to than the hurting Chargers. Take Cincy and the points. 6) Baltimore at NY Jets. Jets are for real, more than the Ravens. Take the Jets , give the points. 7) St. Louis at Atlanta. A last place free for all. Take Atlanta, throw the points out the window. 8) Indy at Tampa Bay. No Harbaugh to heckle this week. Take Tampa Bay, give the points. 9) Dallas at SF. The big game of the year. Yeah, right. Aikman, strained neck and all, is starting. And making himself a target. Hope the insurance policy's paid up. Take SF and the points. 10) Seattle at Denver. This ought to prove to be a good game. Both coming off big wins, Seattle's even bigger. That's BIG mo in their favor. Take Seattle and the points. 11) Jacksonville at Tennessee. Jags have lost their edge as of late. Oilers are surprising a lot of people, especially themselves. Take Oilers, give poi- nts. 12) Philly at Phoenix. Philly shocked the Cowboys again this season. Phoenix is on the verge of being run out of town. Take Philly and the points. 13) Detroit at Green Bay. This might be the best Monday Night game yet. Or a blow out. Which Lions team will show up to play? It's anyone's guess. Take the Pack, give pity to the Lions. Well, there ya go. My picks and views for week 10. Enjoy the games. q 97Nov01 6:00 am *snicker-bar* from Ghek the Kaldane I noticed during the movie "My Best Friends Wedding"....they kept referring to a Sacramento Baseball team....
