ause top 97Sep10 18:16 from Damage Inc. @ ECBBS Naturally, I would not hesitate to endorse a Sun product. The UltraSparcs are great machines. No complaints whatsoever. SGI makes a great box, too. HP still makes great servers, although the workstations have really lost their competitive edge to Sun and SGI. Sun is also one of the few companies that will publically and aggressively stand up against Microsoft. That is something everyone should be grateful for because in these times, it's important to have a big company like Sun going to bat to keep Microsoft from running amok and doing the Wrong Thing. 97Sep11 16:17 from Atomic Skull @ ECBBS About the only thing keeping SGI alive right now is Alias. And don't think for a minute that companies like Digital Domain wouldn't love to run it on more cost effectie CPU's like the Alpha... Right now, the Alpha is the CPU of choice in high end 3-d animation when running Lightwave or Softimage. 97Sep11 17:12 from Damage Inc. @ ECBBS I'd wager you know far more about that industry than I... but by and large that industry isn't really where any of the server/workstation vendors make their real cash, tho. 97Sep11 17:49 from Nexus @ ECBBS Changed the MB speed to 75Mhz, hasn't blown up yet. :) Didn't improve my D3D score that much (though it did increase), I'll have to WinBench it. 97Sep11 18:24 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Hm. Curly: Okay, so my 133 MHz system isn't optimally using m 10ns SDRAM DIMM yet. We've established that. However, there is still an improvement over slower 60ns DRAM--it's just nowhere near the potential of the SDRAM. I figure that the next motherboard/CPU I get will be able to take better advantage of the DIMM... 97Sep12 01:13 from Freddy @ ECBBS Heh...people on this board as soothsayers. Doesn't fly. I remember back in 87 when everyone was talking about how Apple was about to go belly up. Hmmm...it's ten years later and they are even bigger. 97Sep13 10:04 from Jetrock @ ECBBS yes, this is true, but Apple has been losing money and market share for the past couple of years. Although you can still lose money and market share with a great machine, and you can profit on crap if your marketing department is suitably overpaid... 97Sep13 15:25 from Nexus @ ECBBS Hmmm, I've set my MB back to 66Mhz for now, I was getting too many Blue Screens O' Death since I went to 75Mhz. A common denominator (dunno if it's *the* common denominator) was that I was running Netscape most, if not all, of the times I got blue screens. I'm still running 3.X, I wonder if 4.03 or whatever is the currant version, would work better? I didn't have any problems playing Moto Racer n stuff. 97Sep13 17:48 from Atomic Skull @ ECBBS Freddy: The Alpha offers a better price/performance value than the PowerPC.. :b 97Sep13 19:11 from Freddy @ ECBBS I think with Bill Gates making all the MS software for mac, that the market is going to pick up (and it did within hours of the big annoucment). 97Sep14 01:44 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Um, Microsoft has been making software for the Macintosh since 1984. 97Sep15 00:47 from Freddy @ ECBBS Yah, like I was saying before. Jets, I know you're smarter than that, why are you being intentionally stupid? The answer was there, staring you in the face, I shouldn't have to read _and_ interpret the answer for you. Would you stick a Mac version of Word into your IBM and complain? 97Sep16 14:44 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Because this guy Curly told me that I don't have to recompile Microsoft's code to allow it to work on different platforms. 97Sep16 14:45 from Jetrock @ ECBBS oh yeah, here's a bit on the properties of SDRAM from my motherboard manual: SDRAM is an advanced new memory technology that boosts overall system performance with its ability to synchronize all operations with the processor clock signal. This makes the implementation of control interfaces easier, and speeds up column access time. SDRAM features an on-chip burst counter that can be utilized to increment column addresses for very fast burst accesses, which means that SDRAM allows new memory accesses to be initiated before the preceding access has been finished. 97Sep16 17:07 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS Not this Curly. You know better than your posts on this thread. Why be intentionally difficult? 97Sep16 22:09 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Because you're being intentionaly difficult. What we were TALKING about, was the ability of the PowerPC to run Windows 95 software under the still-vaporware new MacOS. Now, you said, 'The Mac most certainly does run "native-code" when running Microsoft software. The source code for Word, Excel, Access and such are not written in Intel assembler but in Microsoft C which can compile for a number of different platforms, Intel, Motorola, DEC Alpha and others. So, either bnoth IBM and Mac platform _both_ run native code. Or neither does.' Now, this misses the point entirely. For starters, just recompiling the same software code for the different platform assumes that they're both using the same operating system. Uh, no. Microsoft software written for the Mac is different, at the pre-compiled code level, from Microsoft software of the same name written for the PC (or, hell, for any software company). 97Sep16 07:00 from Bill Brandt @ SBBS Aple better off today? You gotta be kidding. If you define "better" bt % of market share they're almost off the screen... 97Sep18 1:00 am Newsflash! from.... from Nightwind @ Bantoom _ Sac-CA Jetrock: Excuse me, but huh? C code precompiled is just a text file. the *native* C compiler is used to compile the code for any given system. The resultant *machine* code is *native* to whatever computer it was compiled for. The *Source* code is the same (barring non-ANSI C standard quirks, which is what a make file is for). None of this is Operating system dependant. That is why I can take C code(source) written on a Unix machine(take your pick), and compile it for my IBM PC Compatible. What you've just said above makes no sense. But then again, neither of you make any sense. 97Sep17 09:12 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS Jets, you went on a rant about Mac's running Microsoft s/w using an emulator. That is not necessary, for the third time, because MicroSoft products are compiled for the Mac. And the DEC Alpha. 97Sep17 09:15 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS Jets, apparently you don't know much about Object Oriented compilers. The same source code can be easily compiled for different operating systems. In fact that is how applications are regularly done to run on the Mac, PC, Alpha, Unix, SunOS and others. Unless you have some inside information I believe that you are quite wrong and making a guess about different source code for the Mac vs. PC. You were wrong about the development language used to create MSWord, what is your evidence for different source code? C++, Java, Delphi, Smalltalk and many other OO languages compile for many platforms from the same source code. So does Microsoft Visual Basic. 97Sep17 12:25 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Curly: I went on a rant about running Windows 95 software on an emulator, Microsoft's or not. Windows 95 software does not work normally under the MacOS without the aid of an emulator. There may well be a lot of similarities in the code between the Mac and Win versions of, say, Microsoft Word. But there are substantial differences in the ways their respective operating systems work, as well as their handling of hardware and interacting with the computer. If you are running the same operating system and they have similar hardware, such as, say, an Intel machine runing UNIX and an Alpha running UNIX, then portability may just be a matter of recompiling the source code. But under different operating systems, with different programming "hooks", and with different hardware situations, it's just not that simple. If you run a MacOS program next to its Win95 port, there are noticeable differences in the software--sometimes large ones, in the case of, say, the original Microsoft Works for Macintosh, and the first Microsoft Works for DOS. And I didn't even guess at the development language used to develop MS Word, so I don't see how I could be "wrong" or "right" about something I didn't mention. It was you who said it wasn't written in assembler, which I thought was odd as I never said it was... 97Sep17 13:10 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS Please listen, the differences you speak of are not in the common source code for Word. The differences between operating systems and/or platform is in the compiler. It is common for a single program to be compiled three times, for Windows, Mac and X-Windows. The same source code is used in each instance but the look & feel is very different. That is not a function of the underlying source code but the compiler. If I wrongly attributed your statement about the language Word was written in then I retract it and apologize. But the fundamental thrust of the arguement is still valid, the same source code can result in _many_ "native code" embodiments. Therefore the Mac implimentation of Word differs from the Win95 implementation of Word only in the compiler, not in the source code. This is the goal in higher level languages, one file to maintain. If you ever have to maintain source code for different platforms then you'll quickly realize the need which generated C, C++, J+, Java, Smalltalk and a myriad of other languages which compile to different platforms and operating systems. Software maintenence is an incredibly trouble-prone and difficult job. 97Sep18 00:52 from Jetrock @ ECBBS Yeah, I'm aware of these facts, and it's certainly the case that high-level languages enhance portability. But a straight 'a port is a port' approach would imply that all OS's handle things like mouse support, help-file utilities, etc., the same, and they don't.bbIf the compiler can do all this stuff, that's fairly amazing... 97Sep18 4:46 am movin' N shakin' from Ghek the Kaldane @ Bantoom _ Sac-CA Ordered a Scanrom4e from PcZone a week ago....I wonder where it is....have to check....(anyone else get one?) - Drumming fingers in Carmichael Trading Post 100 messages - 6 new oto ew nter ngoto elp Trading Post) read ump ext

To the U.S., "economic ally" is equivalent to "slave state". one thing I thought about last night was Turk's statement of how Tito saved Yugoslavia from Hitler--and thought, "How amazing, that it was so fortuitous that there was a bloodthirsty dictator controlling Yugoslavia to save the country from being controlled by another bloodthirsty dictator!" 97Sep12 21:41 from Freddy @ ECBBS Hmmm. It's amazing hearing all this economic talk. Thing is in my econ class nearly 60% of the class failed. So, for anyone to listen to this drival means that it'll just continue a sad trend. Damn, I'm good...and I can find my way around a book store too. 97Sep12 23:57 from sinner @ ECBBS no indications of such are evident here, son. so, did that economics class get you the prison gaurd job? or was it the gay and lesbian section of the book store? 97Sep13 09:16 from Jim Earl @ ECBBS See policy #1, sinner. Your point is? 97Sep13 19:18 from Freddy @ ECBBS I was just stating that 60% of people who take econ fail, and here are a bunch of people giving out free economic advice. You get what you pay for, and sometimes less. 97Sep13 19:46 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS Two weeks ago the London-based "Economics" magazine had a special on the failure of economists and economy theory to prepare for today. In other words not just 60% failed but _everyone_ in _all_ the classes failed. Typical of ivory-tower academists... 97Sep13 21:29 from Freddy @ ECBBS Funny thing is that economic theory had more then one side, and not all sides are looked at. It's cool. My teacher and I had exactly the same ideas and principals about economics and we had no clue until the class started. Thing is he and I have had the right ideas all along too. Then you get people out there who don't agree with watching how things have happened in the past to predict what may happen in the future. I really enjoy the doom sayers talking about how the debt is a big problem. Is the problem the debt or the defict? or both? I especially love the fact that reducing the defict can mean an increase in spending from the year before. It can also mean just reducing how much you were going to increase the spending. How can people be so stupid with political BS? 97Sep13 23:37 from Curly Surmudgeon @ ECBBS "Columbus was the first economist. He didn't know where he was going. He deceived his men. A balanced budget isn't the answer either. ACtually, a flexible budget near to a balanced budget is the answer, and all Economists know it, unfortunatley if I gave a little kid a candybar every day for a year, and then didn't give him one anymore he'd hate me for not giving him "his" candy bar. He know's that he deserves it and is supposed to get it. Basically, the govt is the same way. People don't want to see their jobs eliminated or "ASSISTANCE" (it's not helping that's why the ""'s) taken away. Point is we do need to spend money to move the economy, and actually save or return taxes to reduce inflation. Fact is we haven't had a balanced or a positive budget for years, and the prices of things prove this. Inflation is always increasing. Eventually we won't be able to afford anything. This is the only real threat we have by not reducing our deficit spending. When I say deficit I mean real deficit spending. Not reducing a proposed increase, but actually reducing the deficit down to budget, or surplus. 97Sep17 19:10 from JoePhoto @ ECBBS Even though a deficit is 'inflationary'; I still do not think that is the biggest cause of inflation. I still think it is UNIONS. Typical examples are the two recent setlements by UPS and BART. UPS got almost 20% over three years when the actual inflation is only 1.5%/yr. BART got over 12% over three years and a $3000/yr bonus. Both of these WILL be paid for with higher rates -- otherwise known as inflation. I have no problem with an ACTUAL COL increase; (and also no problem with Merit Reviews and proper increases); but any across the board increase that is more than past inflation is inflationary. 97Sep17 23:12 from Freddy @ ECBBS My God! JoePhoto, if you were in the same room with me right now, I'd kiss you. Heh...reminds me of Mad about you last night. I agree that deficit spending needs to be eliminated immediately, because borrowing money from banks to cover the deficit makes the government beholden to the rich bankers they're borrowing from. And a great way to cut the deficit would be to hack out the hundreds of billions in pork programs and wealthfare that line businessmens' pockets to our own detriment. 97Sep18 4:50 am movin' N shakin' from Ghek the Kaldane @ Bantoom _ Sac-CA Health Benifits aren't taxed.........perhaps they should be.... ause top 97Sep10 8:08 am Golden Jubilee from Petrouchka GAME OF THE WEEK: Tampa Bay at Minnesota Who will win? Tampa Bay Why? The D.U.E. theory. The Bucs are LONG over-DUE for a good season... UPSET OF THE WEEK: There shouldn't be any, there have been plenty the last 2 weeks, but I'll go with my hometown team, San Diego, over Carolina. Even though I have Carolina picked in the last message, this is the upset I would LIKE to see happen. 97Sep12 9:06 am Pass Interference from Tomcat Leader And here's mine, with a little note on each, due to time constraint. 1) SF, no braine. WithYoung back, look for a better passing game. 2) Atlanta. They are getting more yards rushing than passing. look for a corection to that. 3) Washington. they should be mad as hell for getting "Donkey Konged" by the Steelers. Revenge time. 4) Giants. Same theory here. 5) KC. right now they are on a roll after their comeback. Grbac ran a flawless two minute drill, expect to see more of it. 6) Chicago. They can't lose forever and this could be their coming out party. 7) Green Bay. This also a no brainer, but it will be close. 27-13 Pack. 8) Minnesota. this isone of my "look out" teams and so far, they have been true to my word. The defense will have a field day with Dilfer. Trust me. 9) San Diego.Humphries is back and ready to shotgun his way to the end zone. the OL has to step up to the occasion and give him GOOD protection. 10) Denver. Even though i can't stand cry babies like Elway, his arm makes up for it. Expect to see LONG passes. 11) Jets. Another look out team and they are hungry. Johnson WILL get yardage. Guaranteed. 2) finally Philly. they are on an all time high after their upset (that I called) of the Pack. They can win this one if, IF, they keep their heads about themselves. Well sports fans, there you have it. Predictions, and perhaps coridictions from Tomcat Leader and Petrouchka. And last night Alabama shut out Vanderbilt 20-0. so enjoy the games and see ya at halfti. For Petrouchka, I'm Tomcat Leader. 97Sep13 8:25 pm Golden Jubilee from Petrouchka And I'm Petrouchka. The upset-bug that ransacked the NFL jumped to the NCAA today... numerous upsets... Boston College 31, West Virginia 24 Arizona State 23, Miami (FL) 12 This was only the 2nd time in 22 years Miami lost their home opener. #11 Michigan 27, #7 Colorado 3 Nebraska 38, Central Florida 24 Why is this an upset? Considering Nebraska was favored to win by 45 points, and that CFU held the LEAD in the 3rd Quarter... Purdue 28, Notre Dame 17 Hahaha! I love it! Yet another blow to the most overrated football program in college. And with Michigan State next week, and Michigan the week after that, look for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame to PLUMMET to 1-3! ehaoeh! And, most amazingly... UCLA 66, #10 Texas 3 Consider that an unranked, mediocre UCLA team, 10 point underdogs, went down TO TEXAS, and humiliated the #10 team in the nation. You see favorites slaughter mismatched opponents, but I have NEVER seen an Underdog take the boots to a BETTER opponent like UCLA did today. EVER. Consider this: This was Texas' worst loss in 93 years. 97Sep14 11:23 am Pass Interference from Tomcat Leader And Ohio State won big as well. With their win, they moved to 8th in the AP top 25. Ohio State is 2-0. In Nascar news, Todd Bodine has started for Jeff Burton in the Country Music Television 300 at Loudon, NH. today. Burton, currently 6th in the points, has a inner ear problem that is throwing off his equilibrium, thus prompting Bodine's start. at the time of this post, Bodine is running 37th, two laps down. Football updates coming up later. 97Sep14 2:00 pm Golden Jubilee from Petrouchka Full update on Tuesday morning, but so far I'm AWESOME!!! I haven't missed a GAME!!! I chose Oakland. they Won. Green Bay. Won. Detroit. Won Tampa Bay. Won. I chose Washington, in overtime. They won, in overtime. DAMN I'm good. hehe. 97Sep16 9:09 am Infobahn from Ghek the Kaldane R U Scikic? 97Sep17 7:55 am Pass Interference from Tomcat Leader Six and eight. Errrgghhh! Eagles had the game sewn up and the FG snap gets fumbled, as well as the game. Can you say gift wrapped? Geeez! Eagles coach Ray Rhodes felt so bad that he jokingly wished he was hit by a car. Well, yesterday he was rear ended by another car. He was fine with a couple of bruises. Yo, Ray, we should watch what we wish for, cause we just might get it. Washington, Seattle, KC, SF, GB and enver all won. And now a cmentary. I read (finally) an article in TV Guide about Jerk Gordon and immediatly went balistic over the comments made. "Earnhardt is scared to death of Jeff Gordon", said Darrell Waltrip. PLEASE! Earnhardt could care less about the sniveling little jerk! Gordon has now two driving titles compared to Earnhardt's seven. Gordon made $5 million compared to Earnhardt's $30 million + this year and he didn't have to put one wheel on the track. Earnhardt can run circles around this fool and not break a good sweat. The point is Gordon is not the "savior" of NASCAR. Earnhardt put NASCAR on the map and as far as fans are concerned, IS NASCAR. When Gordon got put in the wall, the crowd cheered loudly at Dover. Then when he went behind the wall, they jeered him even harder. Now, you tell me who the fans are behind. As for Darrell Waltrip, stop the suck up job. Just because YOUR career is over, doesn't mean to pass this fool the torch. There are two shadows YOU'RE standing in, Pettyarnhardt. As well as Jerk Gordon. I'm Tomcat Leader. 97Sep18 4:52 am movin' N shakin' from Ghek the Kaldane And Thats the way it was.....[insert Turtle Wax commercial] Temple of Beauty 22 messages - 7 new oto ew nter ngoto elp Temple of Beauty] read ump ext
